Delicacies at Restaurant-Shop De Smidse!

With spring under way and the summer approaching, one of Holland’s best kept secrets is a visit to the estate Heerlijkheid (Glory) of Hemmen, just below the Rhine river, under Wageningen. There you will find not only medieval ruins, lovely old village streets and one of the country’s most distinctive churches, but also the ‘De Smidse’ (The Forge). De Smidse, run by friendly family Jansen-Jonkers, is a wonderful health food store in an old forge. You can still see the chimney where the fire was burning during the time it was still a forge. Next to the store there is the barn where once the horses were shoed. In the store one can buy regionally produced organic products, such as Hemmen’s Country Bread. On the outside terrace or in the Swedish attic, one can sit for a moment of rest, with an Escoffee cappuccino, a piece of apple pie or Ananda Chocolate bar!
